Evaluation: Modern Family

As the years have gone by, social norms have changed. The weird thing about our society is that it is constantly evolving and transforming and this is evident in the ABC comedy show Modern Family. People seem to gravitate towards this show because not only does it show how different each family is, but also because it does a good job of making people laugh. Modern family made its debut on the ABC network in September of 2009 and since then it has proven to be a hit amongst viewers. Its last season was the most successful season so far with an average viewership of approximately 12.93 million viewers. I have never really followed the show up until my parents started watching last year and I admit that the show got me hooked. What I found interesting about the show is that it aims to destroy social stereotypes while also satirizing the relationships established within the show.
Like I said, the show's main goal is to destroy expected stereotypes and it shows the audience that not all families are the same and that every relationship has its problems. In the past, the media has force fed us this perfect image of what a family is and what they think it should be. They told us that families are supposed to never fight or get into disagreements, that children are supposed to act a certain way, and that a family must consist of a couple of the opposite sex and their children, and that it is inappropriate for a man to marry a woman half his age. This is the mold that society has created for us and this show’s main objective is to shatter that expectation.
In one episode entitled That Time of the Month, Phil Dunphy, the patriarch of the Dunphy household, tries to convince his son to pull a prank on his mother and his two sisters so that the two of them could go to a trapeze class alone. Phil wants to leave the three females at home because they are all coincidentally on their period. In attempt to get out of the house, Phil tells his son Luke to rub fake blood on his hands so that the two could escape and pretend to go to the hospital. When Luke tries to pull the prank, he accidentally slips and he appears to be drenched in blood and there is blood all over the wall. Claire, Phil’s wife, figures out what is going on and eventually the three ladies start yelling at the two males telling them that they are inconsiderate jerks.
That is just one example of the crazy stuff that goes in this show, there are many other instances where a different topic or issue is tackled. The show tackles issues in relation to same sex couples, one’s role in a marriage, and even problems that teenagers go through. Personally, I think that the message this show is trying to convey is one worth sharing. This show not only does a great job showing viewers that families are complicated and that you cannot truly define them, but it also does a stellar job of providing its audience with some laughter.

  1. I found this evaluation to be extremely interesting. I have never watched this show before but have heard numerous things about it. I do not want to hop on the bandwagon with the rest of America, but if 12.93 million people find this show interesting there has to be something that I would enjoy in it. The one thing that really caught my eye was that the goal of this show was to destroy expected stereotypes. When I think about watching a new show, I think about what they are going to have to offer me that is different than what I am already viewing with my other shows. I find it cool that they want to break the expected stereotypes and do their own thing. There is a huge stereotype for the typical American modern family, but I love how they have added humor. I am a sucker for something that will make me laugh. It seems like this show takes serious situations and some how applies humor to it to be less dramatic. After reading this review I am really upset that I have not watched this show yet. This show seems like a great show to evaluate and I definitely will need to record the next episode.

  2. I am also very addicted to the show Modern Family. Everything about the show is so dysfunctional and that is why I am so intrigued about it. I think it resembles somewhat of my family at times so that makes me want to keep watching it to see if they keep mimicking my family more and more. Also, the characters on the show are all hilarious. My favorite character by far is Phil Dunphy because of his off the wall traits. He is a kid in a grown man’s body. I love the shows where he and Luke do something so "smart" to them but to the rest of the family thinks is stupid but still goes along with it. The family in the end loves each other very much you can tell which I love. As much as they look like they can’t stand each other they do love each other dearly. Many of the characters I have seen on talk shows and I notice the same traits about all of them. They are all so genuine and care very much about how people look at them. They care about that which is a very good attribute to me when being a good actor/actress. When the Emmys come around Modern Family basically wins everything across the board and when they are all up there they act like such a family which I love. Thank you very much for evaluating this show as I love it and watch it every week! It’s like a religion now in our family.

  3. I love Modern Family! Everything about this show and everything you stated I agree with. I know the directions say to find a blog that you are familiar with and disagree with it using different criteria but I found that so hard to do because what everyone had to say, I could agree and understand it. I believe that it is interesting the way that the media tries destroying the stereotypes of modern families because honestly that’s really what we need to be doing. What is a Modern family? Who is the one to tell us really that these things in a family should be or shouldn’t be? I feel that in these days that everything is so different with different with different families. That’s what I truly love about this show. The way they take all the different families and bring them together, or put them into real life situations relates to so many people. Which is also another reason why I think it is so popular, because it really does relate.
One other thing that I personally believe this show does for a lot of people is to make people realize that no matter what the situation is and how struggles play out in your life that at the end of the day your family, the people that love you no matter what, are really what you need in life. The amount of support shown in the families themselves and even interconnected with all the families is large.
And on a side note, I have seen the episode that you mentioned in the blog writing, and just reading that replaying it in my mind made me laugh out loud. There really are some crazy things that go on in this show.

  4. I love the show Modern Family even after only seeing it a couple of times while I randomly surfed my cable channels. I can honestly say that I agree with everything you said about this show except the part of it trying to break down stereotypes. I think this because at the end of the day, the show in itself still has many stereotypes within it within the family and the daily conflicts they face. But I really liked the episode you brought up, it seemed like an episode I'd enjoy very much and laugh at a whole lot as well!
